What type and size of log do I need for mushroom plugs?

The logs used for mushroom plugs should be freshly cut, no older than three weeks. Choose logs from trees that loose their leaves in autumn.  The best logs to use would be from Oak, Birch and Beech.

A log 10-15cm (4-6") diameter and 50cm  (20") long will hold about 10-15 plugs.
