Why are my brussels sprouts open and leafy instead of being hard and round?

There are a number of reasons why brussels sprout produce open, blown sprouts. This can occur if there is insufficient organic mater in the soil, the plants have not been planted firmly or they have been planted in a loose soil. Where blown sprouts are seen on the plant these should be removed. Keep the plants well watered in dry spells.
