What growing conditions are required for the Lemon Verbena?
Posted by Suttons Staff on 17 July 2013 08:53 AM
The lemon verbena is hardy to -5°C (23°F) and in milder parts of the country they can be grown outdoors against a warm sheltered wall in full sun. Grow the plant in a poor, well drained, dry soil. In winter give additional frost protection by covering with fleece. Apply a mulch in autumn to protect the roots. In colder areas grow the plant in container that can be moved into a frost free greenhouse or conservatory before the first frosts.

During the growing season regularly pinch out the growing tips to promote a bushy habit and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer fortnightly.

To harvest the leaves gently pull off the stem or cut off the young shoot tips. Lemon Verbena is a good alternative to lemon grass or lemon zest.
