How do I grow Chop Suey Greens?

Choose a shady area to grow Chop Suey Greens. Sow the seed from mid April to mid September into a finely raked moist soil and cover lightly with soil. Thin out the resulting seedlings to 10cm (4″) apart. Early sowings can be made in trays indoors or in a greenhouse and grown on, planting in their final position outdoors once the danger of frost has passed. Sow two or three batches of seed a month to obtain a constant supply of leaves throughout summer. It is important to keep the plants well watered in dry spells as dry soil conditions result in the plants flowering prematurely. When the plants start to flower it causes the leaves to have a bitter taste.

The plants are ready for harvesting approximately 6-8 weeks from sowing when the flowerless plants have reached a height of  15-30cm (6-12″). Harvest 10-25cm (4-10″) of growth leaving 5cm (2″) of the plant to re-grow. The plants quickly recover and it will be possible to harvest the foliage once or maybe twice more from each plant.
