Pot up the fuchsia plug plants into 9-10cm pots (3½-4") a multipurpose compost would be suitable. Grow on the plants in a greenhouse or conservatory maintaining a minimum temperature of 10ºC (50ºF), mist with water during hot, dry spells. Provide some shade from bright sunshine. As they develop further pot on into 12cm (5") pots.
Tender varieties should be lifted and potted up before the first frosts and over-wintered in a greenhouse or conservatory, at a minimum temperature of 5ºC (41ºF). Rest the plants during the winter, but do not dry them off completely. Occasional watering may be necessary to prevent the compost from becoming dust dry. In spring prune back the plants to strong new shoots In the autumn hardy varieties should be given a mulch of organic material such as leaf-mould or well-rotted garden compost to give added protection from frost. After the risk of severe frost has passed in March, remove the protective covering and prune all shoots back to near soil level where new shoots can be seen. |
