How do you care for a bay tree?

Grow the plants in a warm, sunny position that is sheltered from cold, drying winds which can damage the foliage. In colder areas where the temperatures fall below -5ºC (23ºF) over winter the plant in a greenhouse or conservatory. In spring pot on into a larger container using a John Innes number 3 potting compost, eventually a 38-45cm (15-18in) tub will be required. Once or twice during the summer months trim the plant to shape. Keep the Bay Tree well watered during the summer months and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer weekly.
